The Lion of Babylon - 8 fils
This stamp highlights Iraq's deep Mesopotamian roots and its rich archaeological heritage through the depiction of the ancient Lion of Babylon, a historic basalt statue dating back to the reign of Nebuchadnezzar II. The illustration carries a powerful message of historical longevity, strength, and national pride, connecting the modern independent Kingdom of Iraq to one of the world's oldest cradles of civilization. In the Iraqi context of the 1930s, this 15-fils issue represents an institutional effort by the postal administration to construct a unified national identity that transcends contemporary divisions by anchoring it in a shared ancient history. Framed by delicate floral borders and bilingual text, the stamp reflects the cultural sovereignty of a nation defining its unique historical space on the international stage.
