Welcome to Iraq Stamps

Baghdad in British Occupation - Rumeli Hisar Castle

The theme of this program highlights the strategic and military legacy of the region through the depiction of the Rumeli Hisar, the "Fortress of Europe" on the Bosphorus. The illustration carries a potent message of defensive strength and historical conquest, reflecting the Ottoman Empire's martial pride and its control over vital maritime passages. In the context of 1917 Iraq, the presence of this red pictorial stamp—repurposed with the British occupation surcharge—symbolizes the disintegration of a transcontinental empire as its peripheral territories were carved out by Allied forces. It underscores a moment where the architectural icons of Turkish sovereignty were physically overwritten by British administrative marks, signaling a shift in institutional identity from a province of the Sublime Porte to a territory under Western military guardianship.
