Welcome to Iraq Stamps

General Abdul Karim Qasim (1914-1963)

Issued in 1962, this stamp commemorates General Abdul Karim Qasim (1914-1963), leader of the 14 July 1958 Revolution and Prime Minister of the Republic of Iraq. The design depicts Qasim in military uniform raising his cap in salute, with the republican flag and modern government buildings in the background. The stamp formed part of a series celebrating the achievements of the republic and the anniversary of the revolution that ended the Hashemite monarchy and established a republican system of government. By issuing this commemorative stamp, the Republic of Iraq honored Qasim's leadership during the formative years of the republic. The issue highlighted themes of national sovereignty, modernization, and political transformation, while emphasizing the government's efforts to promote development and strengthen national institutions during the early 1960s.
